Love Stories: Avery and Mandy

Jewelry Love Story (1)

Meet Mandy and Avery.  It was an absolute joy getting to know Avery as we worked together on a very special engagement ring for Mandy.  Avery works in creative advertising as a copywriter and met me in San Francisco by way of Denver CO.  Mandy is a mental health counselor from Twin Falls, ID.  The two played a game of cat and mouse- chasing each other around the West Coast until finally they finally submitted to fate and got engaged.  You can find them both living happily ever after in Portland, OR.

1. Share a little bit about your love story with us.  What gives you butterflies?

“We often joke that our love story has made us terrible at giving relationship advice. ‘The person of your dreams isn’t just going to walk into your life randomly one day.’  Well, in our case, they did, and it was love at first bottomless-mimosa brunch.
Long story short: Mandy visited Denver for work, Avery moved to San Francisco for school, Mandy visited San Francisco for Avery, Avery surprised Mandy in Portland, and after a couple years of long phone calls, postponing saying “I love you,” saying “I love you,” long distance, and then non-distance, we went to Ireland and got engaged.
And finally started what we were supposed to start when Mandy visited Denver for work.”Screen Shot 2016-01-15 at 7.25.01 PM

2. You just got engaged!  What is your next big adventure?

“The wedding! We’re planning for 2017, so that will be our next big adventure. Being engaged is great and all but I [Avery] am really trying to lock this down legally ASAP. In the meantime, we’re excited to have enough time to celebrate our engagement with all our family and friends.”

3. We believe love is best seen in the everyday things.  What are your favorite daily or weekly rituals together?

“We love spending time in the kitchen — cooking and experimenting with new recipes and techniques together. But as far as rituals go, the best is probably just enjoying coffee together every morning.
Either that or drinking beers and playing Big Buck Hunter. We almost never do that in the mornings, though.”

4.  Tell us your drink of choice.

“Mandy enjoys (and makes really good) Sazeracs. Avery is more of a Scotch guy. But most of the time, we’re just in the mood for beers. “

5. Mandy’s ring has a truly unique story. Can you lay it out for us?

“Mandy took a trip to Thailand in 2013, where she visited a Buddhist Temple in Chiang Mai. While there, a monk gave her a blessing and tied a strand of rope around her wrist, which she wore for the rest of her trip. She gave that string to Avery a year later because, in her words, ‘You embody the spirit of this blessing.’
After keeping it safe for another year, Avery wanted Mandy to have some of those blessings back, along with his own. So he worked with Kendra to cast strands of the rope into an engagement ring for Mandy. Now, she can carry the blessings of that trip, along with Avery’s blessings and love, on her hand always.”

Love Stories: Jacqueline and Jake

Jacqueline & Jake(1)Meet Jacqueline and Jake. Their love story has the shine of destiny. It’s been a joy to get to know this pair and to create rings imbued with meaning for them. Jacqueline, a safety specialist at Gilead Sciences, grew up in San Diego before meeting Jake at college in Tucson, AZ. Jake is an Arizona native, hailing from Phoenix. He works as a Senior Strategist at Venables Bell and Partners. These days you find them in Noe Valley, San Francisco.

Share a little bit about your love story with us.  What gives you butterflies?

Jacqueline: We met 11 years ago at the University of Arizona in Tucson when Jake was a freshman and I was a sophomore. We were constantly running into each other without warning- even at out of state gatherings. We began to realize that maybe it wasn’t up to us and we decided not to fight it.

I don’t know about butterflies, but there are many times when we meet up after work somewhere in the city, having not seen each other all day, and we will be dressed exactly alike! We laugh a lot 🙂

You just got married.  What’s your next big adventure?

We’re currently planning a honeymoon throughout East Africa! A little safari action in Tanzania and some white sand beaches in Zanzibar.

We believe love is best seen in the everyday things.  What are your favorite daily or weekly rituals together?

We really enjoy taking strolls through our neighborhood and the surrounding areas. There are always new places popping up to discover and try out.

Tell us your drink of choice.

Jake is a mezcal guy- he likes it straight with a back of a cinnamon sprinkled orange slice. I like just about anything with jalapeño in it.

What advice would you give to couples just starting to plan their wedding? What part was the most fun?

Don’t do something just because everyone says you have to. We didn’t do flowers or any expensive decorations. We just got a couple of succulents from Home Depot and it was gorgeous! We didn’t do a traditional cake, we ordered It’s its and everyone loved them. Just be creative together and do it your way.  Without a doubt, the most fun was having everyone we loved at one hotel around a pool all weekend. It couldn’t have been more perfect.Untitled design-1

We hope you love your new rings. Can you tell us why?

The rings were made from my mother’s wedding band that she left me. She passed away 10 years ago but her relationship with my dad was one of the strongest, most beautiful examples of love I have seen to this day. Now these rings are a reminder everyday to create our own version of enduring love.

What a beautiful sentiment. It was an honor to create your bands, Jake and Jacqueline! We’re wishing you a fabulous honeymoon in Africa and a joyful life together.

Teddy: Our first date was incredible. We hiked the Dipsea Trail. It’s a 7.5 mile hike from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. It being one way, we had to hike an additional 7.5 miles back to our cars once we got there. I knew that if we could hike 15 miles on a first date (my personal best until our engagement), then there was something special. I’ve always heard this advise of not taking a first date on any sort of physical excursion, but I’ve always been one to jump in the deep end.

Vaish: The everyday simple things like cooking dinner together until Teddy yells at me.

T: Yeah, that’s because you shouldn’t be using a paring knife to chop carrots!

Will you share your proposal story?

T: Of course, like many other things, it was planned to the T and was executed horribly. The date came naturally for me, August 29th, my birthday. I’ve never been a fan of celebrating my birthday, but now I have an actual reason to celebrate on that day – our engagement. We’re both big into the outdoors so Yosemite National Park was the logical place, and what more iconic landmark than Half Dome?!

Over the course of the 34 hour adventure:

We drove 400 miles. Failed attempting to climb Half Dome at midnight (we ended up hiking to the top around 2am). Hiked 22 miles. Slept 3 hours.

Ate 3 Cliff Bars. Met up with two awesome friends at the top (Vaish thought she would surprising me for my birthday, but they were in on it the whole time).

And finally got down on one knee and popped the question at 7am.

We believe love is best seen in the everyday things.  What are your favorite daily or weekly rituals together?

V: We ritualistically go to the climbing gym Tuesday and Thursday.

T: But that may just because of our love affairs with climbing.

V: Getting outdoors as much as possible together and trying new restaurants in San Francisco

You just got engaged! What is your next big adventure?

V: Planning the perfect wedding without getting on each other’s nerves.
T: Agreed.  I’ve learned so much, there’s a whole wiki page of things I never knew about Iyer weddings.

We hope you love your new engagement ring.  Can you tell us why?

T: I wanted to give Vaish something special and unique, and I always feel compelled to obsess over every small detail of a gift I give anybody.  This engagement ring is probably the ultimate gift for someone to receive, and I just love how one of a kind and special it is.  I had all these grand ideas and you were really able to help me materialize those thoughts into a truly one of a kind ring.
V:  I love this ring because Teddy captured exactly what I thought would be my ideal engagement ring.  It’s exactly what I had imagined, and couldn’t ask for anything else.  The best part is that he did this with no guidance from me which makes me feel that much more grateful that he knows me that well.
T: I’d love to take all the credit, but truth be told, I tried to pry as much guidance from Vaish and still felt lost.  It was really you, Kendra, who provided all the guidance in picking the stone, materials, and design of the final product.

It was a pleasure to work with you to create Vaish’s ring, Teddy! We’re delighted that the result is something you really love. Thank you for letting us be a part of your love story.

Love Stories: Casey and Jon

For our first Jewelry Love Story, we’d like to introduce you to Jon and Casey. Casey is a music coordinator who hails from Colorado and Jon is an artist from Oahu, Hawaii (check him out! www.jonchingart.com). The couple lives in the Inner Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco.

Share a little bit about your love story with us.  What gives you butterflies?

We met in college when, with a mutual friend, we headed down to Coachella music festival together. We bonded quickly and became close friends, but nothing more for two years. Then one day, while watching Jon surf, it hit me like a freight train – I was in love with him. I worked up the nerve to tell him, while we were walking across the Golden Gate Bridge (cheesy, I know). Turns out Jon had felt that way all along! We are both passionate about music, art, food, and traveling and we have had a lot of incredible trips together.

You just got married.  What is your next big adventure?

We are gearing up to embark on a 5-month travel adventure to Indonesia, Thailand, and India! We have both always wanted to explore that part of the world, and kicking off our marriage and the next chapter of our lives together with a big trip seemed perfect. So we’re quitting our jobs, subletting our apartment, and hopping on a plane to Bali this August!

We believe love is best seen in the everyday things.  What are your favorite daily or weekly rituals as a couple?

Eating together is important to us, and Jon is an amazing cook, so we always enjoy dinner together at the end of the day. On the weekends, we often take advantage of our neighborhood by picking up a dim sum breakfast, and enjoying it in Golden Gate Park. Oh, and we really love watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

Tell us your drink of choice.

I love a good Tom Collins, and Jon is an Old Fashioned man.

What advice would you give to couples just starting to plan their wedding?  What part was the most fun?

Give yourself time to enjoy the engagement and the planning process – don’t rush. But also, don’t overthink it. It’s easy to get caught up in all the details (I’ve fallen down many Pinterest wormholes), but just remember that the real purpose of your wedding is to celebrate your love, and the exciting and meaningful commitment you’re making. Always try to bring the focus back to that. Finally, don’t feel like the planning has to default to the bride (unless that’s what you both want). Our favorite part of the planning process was working together to make every element of the wedding reflect us as individuals and as a couple.

We hope you love your new rings.  Can you tell us why?

In continuing that sentiment I just mentioned, we each worked with a jeweler to design a ring for the another, keeping it a surprise until it was finished. As a result, we ended up with two gorgeous, original, and badass rings that complement each other while having unique styles – just like us! I worked with Kendra Renee to design Jon’s custom ring – a faceted gold band with a vibrant rectangular sapphire. I came to Kendra with my rough ideas, and with her knowledge and experience she was able to not only craft a stunning ring, but make the process feel fun, collaborative, and exciting. Jon and I couldn’t be happier and are both excited to enjoy the ring for life!

Congratulations, Jon and Casey! We’re wishing you luck, love and many adventures. Thank you for letting us be a part of your love story.
