A Special Gift

My friend Eric called me about a month ago and said, “Kendra, I need you to make me a tiara for my sister.”  I said, “Excuse me, a what?”  I have never made a tiara before- in fact, I’ve never even made anything close.  I was nervous at first, but the more he told me, the more excited about this project I got.

So here’s the story: Eric and his sister Vanessa grew up in Italy.  When they were little, they spoke a mixture of Italian and English, and friends and family called  Vanessa “La Pricipessa” (Princess, in Italian).  Ever since, Eric has bought his sister a tiara for every major event in her life.  Next week she graduates from college, and he wanted to get her a really special gift.

I loved the story behind the gift, and so I thought a lot about what kind of tiara this should be.  I wanted to convey the sense of openness and possibility that comes with graduation.  My idea was to create a tiara that was not only a crown but a picture of the world, and so I designed a silhouette of a city, a forest, and a village to show Vanessa that the world is hers to explore and enjoy.

I’ve never cut out such a complicated silhouette before- I was so nervous!  But after many hours of intricate sawing with a half-milimeter saw blade, here is the result!

It felt so wonderful to be a part of such a special project.  It’s projects like these that make me feel like I am making a difference in people lives in a small way.  I love doing custom work, or even making things that I know will be given as gifts.  It makes me so happy to know that I am helping to make someone’s day!

Eric promised to get me more pictures of Vanessa wearing the tiara once she opens it.  Check back soon!

My first venture into advertising

Such an elegant blog...

I feel inspired, don't you?

This week I took the plunge into my first paid advertising venture.  In the past, I have solely relied on word of mouth to advertise my work, and while that is still the most important way for me to find new customers, I decided it was time to try to reach out to a new demographic.

I am excited to announce that you can see my ad on the beautiful blog The Inspired Bride.  The blog is a great resource for anyone planning or helping to plan a wedding- it’s full of great ideas and stunning photographs.  Inspired Bride has a beautiful sense of elegance and style- qualities that (hopefully!) align well with my jewelry.  Also, I offer special discounts for brides ordering jewelry to outfit their bridesmaids or themselves- another reason I feel Inspired Bride is a good choice for my first advertising adventure.

This is a complete experiment- I’m testing it out for two months and carefully tracking the results.  We’ll see how it goes!  If you have any feedback on my ad, or an idea of a great spot I should try next shoot me an email!  I’d love to hear from you.

Whatddya think?

Here's what the ad looks like

A fun blog for brides

To get the word out about Kendra Renee Jewelry, part of my marketing strategy is to submit my story to bloggers in related fields all over this crazy interweb.  I’ve been featured on several blogs before, but never like this one!  Emma, one of the brilliant, hilarious writers with Bridezilla.com wrote a feature post about my jewelry this week!  You can read the article here.  This was perfect timing for me because I am trying to break into the bridal market.  Emma announced my special offers for brides ordering for their wedding parties:

  • If you order 3 – 4 pieces, you get 20% off
  • If you order 5 – 9 pieces, you get 35% off
  • If you order 10 or more pieces, you get 50% off

Thanks for the feature, Emma!  It’s such a fun article.

That's right! It's me on the Swoon List!

Definitely worth reading!

New Photographs by Photographer Ross Culliton

So new, they don't have a name yet...

Ross did an amazing job capturing the subtle texture.

It was time for me to have a portfolio of sexy, sleek and enticing photographs of my work.  At the top of my list of reasons for needing these is my deepest heart’s desire: to be accepted into the AltCraft section of this year’s San Francisco American Craft Council Show.  I have always drooled over the ACC shows, and I hope to be a regular in the years down the road.  I was intimidated to apply until I found that they have a section for emerging artists!  With fingers crossed and breath held, I’ll submit my application on Monday.

Not knowing much about photography myself, I hired the talented Ross Culliton to take some shots.  Ross’s portfolio is full of urban landscapes, architectural details, and stunning portraiture.  Product photography is new to him- a bonus for me because he brought a raw creativity to the project.  He worked some magic with lighting and backgrounds to get me some fantastic images.  The two pictures I’ve posted are not only fabulous examples of the work he did for me, but new designs too!  You might recognize the necklace from one of my sketches below…

Ross Culliton does freelance photography frequently.  I would highly recommend his work- email him at [email protected].

Enjoy!

This one doesn't have a name yet, either!

I love the background effects Ross was able to get.
